Our Team

One of Grove Instruments core strengths is our highly qualified team of experts in scientific research and development and engineering. Each brings a unique talent and qualifications in their respective fields, along with the passion and motivation to bring the Grove Instruments technology to market.

Robert A. Peura, PhD, President and Chief Technology Officer
A founder of Grove Instruments, Dr. Peura is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Peura is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers and an IEEE Fellow. He has been a member of the FDA Circulatory System Devices Panel, which reviews and makes recommendations on Pre-Market Approvals. Dr. Peura received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University. He holds six patents dealing with noninvasive glucose and physiological measurements.

Arthur H. Combs, Chief Executive Officer
After a 23 year career in academic medicine, Dr. Combs was recruited to industry in 1997 by Mallinckrodt Inc. after their acquisition of Nellcor Puritan Bennett. Dr. Combs was Mallinckrodt's first Medical Director for their market leading respiratory business and subsequently, their VP of R&D. Since the 2000 acquisition of Mallinckrodt, Dr. Combs has served a long list of private consulting clients in the medical device industry. In 2002, he became VP, R&D and Chief Medical Officer for Everest Biomedical Instruments Company which spun out Brainscope, Inc. in 2006 and successfully divested the parent Company to Stryker International. Since that time, he served as Chief Medical Officer and GM, North America for BMEYE BV of Amsterdam, Netherlands who received both CE mark and FDA 510(k) clearance to the US market for their noninvasive blood pressure and cardiac output technology in 2007. Dr. Combs is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and New York Medical College. He is double Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine having completed his fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He currently holds a faculty appointment at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and 2 honorary fellowships from the American Colleges of Chest Physicians and Critical Care Medicine.

Hannu Harjunmaa, PhD, Vice President and Chief Scientist
A founder of Grove Instruments, Dr. Harjunmaa earned his PhD in physics from the University of Helsinki. Before entering the biomedical devices industry in 1983, his academic work dealt with infrared detectors. As Chief Physicist of Labsystems Oy from 1983 to 1987, he invented a new type of fluorescent immunoassay, designed optical systems for analyzers, and led the Auto-EIA software development project. His work with fluoroimmunoassay instruments continued at the Battelle Memorial Institute Geneva Research Centers and subsequently at IntraCel SA in Geneva , where he began developing the Optical Bridge for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring. He holds 20 patents, dealing with optical measurement systems, immunoassays, liquid handling, and noninvasive blood glucose monitoring.

Stevan Kun, PhD, Chief R&D Engineer
With more than 20 years of hands-on practical experience in instrumentation design, Dr. Kun received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering - Electronics. He completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering - biomedical instrumentation specialty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, MA. Dr. Kun joined Grove Instruments in 2000. He has four patents, is author of 15 journal articles/book chapters and 60 conference proceedings. Dr Kun has expertise in the fields of signal processing, biomedical instrumentation, biosensors, biomedical electronics design, and mathematical modeling.

Rebecca Burrell, PhD, Scientist and Chief Software Engineer
Rebecca earned her PhD from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2000, where she developed a method for using the optical bridge to monitor urea levels in effluent dialysis fluid. Dr. Burrell spent several years working as a software engineer before joining Grove Instruments in 2002. Her professional expertise involves statistical analysis, software design, and systems modeling.
